What I Wore Sunday: Honky-tonk Robot Afro Inspiration

by Shannon

(Editor's note for the day when I get blog hits that aren't just my mom and sister: This week, my blogging partner Ryan, a.k.a. my husband, had a thoughtful post on the election of our new Holy Father. Show him some love. Our only other post was with Hallie Lord's new link up. I would recommend the video in that post if you love Catholic architecture. On that note, we'll be sharing some great pictures of the basilica in Covington, Kentucky, later in the week. You can also swing back in for some date-night fashion, which will feature a really unique vintage needlepoint handbag, for all you accessories luvahs.)

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted."
~Psalm 34:19a

On Friday, I took off work early for a much-needed Mass. Don't you love when the readings and homily seem special-picked just for you? Here's a snippet: Have consolation in the new Holy Father. He has a simple way of identifying with the brokenhearted. We desperately need this consolation. Our cries do not fall on deaf ears, the broken Lamb of God.

Linking up with Fine Linen and Purple for What I Wore Sunday again. It's so fun when all the fashion bloggers show a Pinterest look and interpret it with their own pieces. I didn't exactly do that this week, but I did have modeling inspiration: This Felicitous Life Laura's husband Patrick. He can really work a lens, totally inspiring my photo shoot.

Strike. A. Pose.

From left to right: chicken robot, proud robot, sad robot and losing-balance robot

Hmm. That didn't go so well. That Patrick — he makes it look so easy. Laura, he's a keeper.

In hindsight, I realized this outfits hearkens back to my little sister Kelsey, punk-rocker turned pregnant farmer's wife. Happy birthday, Kels!

Work jacket + dress shirt + denim skirt + boots = Yeeehaw!

Deets:
Plaid coat: Daughters of the Liberation, consignment shop in town
Happy earrings: Francesca's
Striped oxford: J. Crew, consignment shop in town
Flower pendant: vintage, gifted
Gold-studded belt: Target
Denim skirt: LOFT
Country boots: Anne Klein, zappos

Have I told you I love gold accessories?

Speaking of inspiration, my hair isn't cooperating like Annie Hathaway's. It's been more than a year since I cut off my locks, and I think my 'do finally remembered, "Oh, yeah — I'm curly!" Not sure what to do about that, with the Kentucky summer around the corner...

Maybe I'll try my hand at finger curls. Thoughts?

I do love your outfit Shannon. I love a belted shirt. Also a pencil skirt.

  5. You crack me up with the dancing. Cute outfit. I'll be sure to check out the other post you mention as church architecture is one of my favorite things.

  6. You are hilarious! It's always a pleasure to check in on you!

You look so young and fresh in that outfit--maybe this old dog will learn some new fashion tricks from you girls at WIWS. I especially love the vintage pendant.

My next stop: your husband's thoughtful post.

    Happy St. Patty's Day!

    1. One of the best things about the linkup is seeing what other women are wearing. You always look lovely, though, Laura! You have your own classy look. Not sure you need any inspiration.

  7. I can't help you with your curls as my hair is stick straight. But as usually, I love your accessories! They really kick up the striped shirt!

    1. This city is full of consignment stores. I've determined I should very rarely buy retail.

    1. I was soooo stoked to find that oxford for $15 on consignment. I normally wouldn't go over $10 for a shirt, but it fit like it was tailored to me.

  13. Hey sis,
I also love when the mass's readings and homilies speak to me. It doesn't just speak to your mind and heart, but you can feel it in your soul as well. It's such a loving and peaceful feeling.
As for your WYWS, I love it without the jacket and then I love it with the jacket. Would you call it "hick-punk" or "rock-n-hick"? Either works for me.

P.S. Thanks for the birthday shout out! :)

    1. Posing is HARD! I always made fun of America's Next Top Model, and now I'm eating my words.

  16. Do you blow-dry right now? I imagine it would only take a few minutes, and with a straightening serum could at least last you part way through the day? All of these question marks are a good indication of my level of confidence on that...

Anywho, "sad robot" made me BAHA, that coat is fabulous, and the middle picture of you IN the coat is priceless. Frame that, for Pete's sake.

    1. Right now, I air dry. And I'll often tie a silk scarf around my head while it dries, to tame the fly-aways. I use a flattening iron sometimes, but I'm usually too lazy. Hair prep must be quick and easy for me.

I'm like that all the time. No need to frame it when it's live-in-person. True story.

  17. EEeee! The jewelry! LOVE!
Have you ever done finger waves? They aren't too bad. I used to do that them when my hair was short. Kind of fancy, clearly retro.

    1. I tried finger waves today, and it looked ... wavy. Not so retro. I need practice.
